natural beauty of 'Underwater Australia'. However, his latest
work has moved to a different level. Using the effects of water on light and
perception, Vevers creates movement and energy. We are no longer invited to
look 'at' underwater life, but to go 'into' it and feel the pulsating purity
and energy of the subject. A rare achievement.
The artist's life offers some clues/insights into this development. Richard
Vevers turned his back on a career in advertising in London, the
epitomy of modern materialism and superficiality. Moving to
Sydney he turned to his art for release and redemption. He found a deeper,
more natural truth in the subject mater off the shores of Australia. The first
works were those of an artistic observer. His latest works are the artist
conveying the feeling of what he sees, as a metaphor for the alternative life
he has found.
